My walking companions are made of strong, determined stuff as they stick not only to the physical task but also to the spirit of their undertaking.
With the change in my circumstances and me tagging along by car, there are multiple chances for hubby and friend to have a somewhat easier road. They could choose taking relief from having to carry a heavy pack, many pilgrims only carry a day pack and have their heavier bag transferred for them. The option to choose a nicer or quieter accommodation a bit further off the route is also available to them. But no, in total commitment they have continued to shoulder their chosen burden and to stay in the available accommodations.
A few days ago I watched them arrive at a cafe along the way, exhausted, overheated and in dire need of hydration, the tortuous heat of a cloudless, shadeless, summers day taking its toll. They sat, hydrated, ate and napped until they felt ready to face the last hour and a half to our destination for the evening. But never once in all their distress did they express a desire to take the easy way out or to lighten their load. I am so proud of their commitment and determination. Pilgrims to the last.
Yes. CHARACTER is unmistakable, isnt it? People with Character positively ooze it – in every thought, word, and deed. The fact u can SEE IT, that ur committed to ur mates and are car-minoing it to BE THERE, is even evidence of ur Character. Enjoy this last little bit, and tell Christof howdy for me!!
Thanks Elaine, will pass on your best to himself.
